Ok…so it's actually the day before Halloween, and I still don't have a representative display of the ultimate symbol of Autumn and Halloween—the pumpkin. So here's my plan to create some displays that'll take me all the way through Thanksgiving.

• It's not all about orange pumpkins anymore! Have you seen all the different colors that are available? There really are naturally green, yellow, blue, and red pumpkins—with great textures and stripes even. I'm going to pile a bunch of them up on a hay bale with some chrysanthemums next to my front porch steps.

• Can't find colored pumpkins? Just spray paint them with your favorite colors for a one-of-a-kind display. Need stripes or dots? Use craft tape to make stencils.

• My holiday table requires a more opulent centerpiece. I'm dragging out the spray adhesive, some old newspapers, and glitter. Yes, glitter! Take your pumpkins outdoors (for ventilation) spray them down and add copious amounts of glitter. Group them on the table with candles and greenery to make a real statement.

• For a more simple display, I'm going to hollow out a three or five mini pumpkins and use them as votive candle holders in our entry way.

• I'm also stirring up a fast pot of our favorite squash soup (it actually comes in a box from the store) to serve up in a hollowed out pumpkin on Halloween night. My kids love the novelty of eating soup out of a pumpkin, but it's pretty enough to serve at a ladies lunch or on your holiday table.

And of course, "we've" still got to carve the jack-o-lantern for tomorrow. That's the love-of-my-life's job. Thankfully, he's very good and very quick at it!
