Monday was the first day of Fall. I like Fall. I like the weather (especially the temperature), the clothes, the flowers, the food, and everything else that goes with the whole concept of Fall.

Now that we're past the hurricanes, the weather is fabulous in Arkansas. With cool, foggy mornings and afternoon temps in the mid-80s—could it be any better? (Only Spring comes close.) We're not quite there yet, but I'm really looking forward to Fall sweater weather. And the 2008 clothing forecasts tell me that skirts are running longer, waistbands are hitting higher, and big sweaters are still in vogue this season. Yea! (Maybe I need to knit a new sweater??? I'm contemplating the one on the cover of Knits to be Noticed.)

The fall flowers are making their appearance. Don't you love those weird lilies that show up seemingly overnight—the ones with no leaves, only a tall green stalk with a red, spidery-looking flower at the top? (Does anybody know what they're really called? My mama always called them spider lilies.) And I need a pot of deep red chrysanthemums for my front porch to go with the three pumpkins I've already added. The red, orange, and green are so great together, so iconically Fall. I'm also thinking about marigolds. Traditionally, I grow them in the yard in the Summer, but I'm contemplating a pot full on the back deck this season. I've also considered putting pansies in the bed around the birdbath, but my begonias are doing so well, I suppose I'll just leave well enough alone.

Food…Fall is county fair food time. Corndogs, fresh-squeezed lemonade, BBQ, bratwersts, cotton candy, funnel cakes, and fried twinkies paired with the smell of the livestock barn, the roar of the carnival rides, and a trip through the crafts exhibit. (How totally American is that image?) To make up for the decadence of the fair food experience, I'm trying to convince myself that it's homemade soup season, too, and soup's good for you. Right?

It's also time to pick an afghan to crochet this Fall. I'm eyeing a pattern called Reindeer Forest made with lots of front and back post stitches, but I can't show it to you yet 'cause it's not for sale yet. Ah, the perks of working for a publishing company. I'll try to keep you posted on the release date.
