June 21, tomorrow, is the first day of Summer. In Arkansas, it's already been hotter than the darkest depths of Mordor for the past month. And the temperature just keeps going up…
A summer evening in Arkansas— • Our big-ole-almost-grown teenage daughter is out in the yard chasing her father with the garden hose (and he's letting her catch him). • The neighbor's dog has collapsed in a damp spot on our shady back deck—staring at me through the sliding glass door and panting. (Trying to guilt me into letting him share my air conditioning.) • My angel trumpet plant is begging for water. (The thing is 6 feet tall and must be watered daily.) • Mosquitoes are taking over the world. (People with any sense don't actually go outside at night in Arkansas without bug spray.) • Squirrels are playing in the birdbath. • The love-of-my-life has the grill fired up again, and I'm already tired of bar-b-qued chicken. • Picked the first squash of the season out of our garden. (And for future reference, has anybody got a great recipe for eggplant parmesan? We have an eggplant about the size of a ping-pong ball on one of our plants.) • And I'm thinking about my summer wardrobe. I'm currently contemplating the six projects in the book above—#4383 Summer Fashions in Thread Crochet. Really cute tops and a skirt by designer Kristina Dannels. I wish I crocheted fast enough with thread that I had the remotest chance at all of actually hanging any of them in my closet before summer's end. As usual, I've procrastinated too long. More realistically, I'm eyeing the free project Exclusively You tote bags at www.theleisureboutique.com. One of those I might really finish, and you can never have to many tote bags in the summer.
