Has Spring Sprung?

Let's see what's on the calendar…

Tomorrow's March 1. My daffodils and hyacinths think it's springtime. They're all coming up and getting ready to bloom. I've actually passed daffodils on my way to and from work that are already blooming. It's almost Daffodil Festival time again!

Imagine it—seven acres of field filled with over 30 varieties of daffodils. Every year (about mid-March), the Wye Mountain Methodist Church, near Bigelow, Arkansas, opens their amazing daffodil field to the public for their annual Daffodil Festival. I think this year might be the festival's 30th anniversary. And almost every year, my family walks the field, picks daffodils, buys bulbs, eats BBQ, and checks out the craft barn. The whole thing is a not-to-be-missed photo opportunity. Admission is free, but they accept donations, and you pay for the flowers, bulbs, and BBQ.

March is also National Crochet Month, and the Crochet Guild Of America's website lists 78 charities for which crocheters can make and donate hats, blankets, mittens or squares. To see the list, visit www.crochet.org/cgi-bin/charitybyname.pl. I'm on a potholder crocheting kick. Are there any charities for homeless potholders? Seriously, do something nice for yourself by making something for someone in need.

Other March Events:
• Women's History Month
• "One fish, two fish…" March 2, 1904, is Dr. Seuss' Birthday. And I can still recite The Cat in the Hat without peeking!
• March 3, 1847, is Alexander Graham Bell's Birthday. Think he ever imagined cell phones?
• The "Star-Spangled Banner" by Francis Scott Key became our official national anthem on March 3, 1931.
• "Things should be made as simple as possible, but not any simpler."–Albert Einstein, born March 4, 1879. Simple is a good word to live by.
• The soothsayer warns Shakespeare's Julius Caesar to "Beware the Ides of March" which sounds delightfully creepy. In Roman times that simply meant March 15, and, basically, it's still just plain ole March 15.
• St. Patrick's Day is March 17. I'm terrible. I usually forget to wear green, and some kind soul at the office always has to take pity and pin a green bow on me.
• March 18 is our monthly ATC Club Meeting. We get together at the local scrapbook store (Scrapbook Corner) in Little Rock to trade cards and share techniques. Our theme for March is, of course, green.
• Legend says that the swallows return to Capistrano on March 19.
• Spring doesn't officially begin until March 20. (Shh…don't anybody tell the daffodils.)
• Easter and my wedding anniversary both fall March 23 this year. Last year, I received a great ring for a present 'cause he forgot our anniversary, and I got to pick out my gift. According to the Internet, I'm supposed to give the love-of-my-life a watch or furniture for our 17th. So why do I see a chocolate bunny in my future?
• Harry Houdini was born March 24, 1874.
• My birthday is March 26. Let's just say that I'm old enough to know better but still young enough that sometimes I wish that wasn't always so…Really, though, I'm probably just a Spring chicken.
