Pincushions…I have another new obsession, one evidently shared by lots of ladies out there. Creative people are making, collecting, and even trading handmade pincushions. The first pincushions I was exposed to belonged to my mother. One was the classic, store-bought red tomato with a strawberry needle sharpener on a string. The other, a more elegant example, was square with a needlepoint work of flowers for the top and a simple fabric bottom. Both are gone now.

I googled "free pincushion patterns" on the Internet and found oodles. Sew or no-sew, quilted, cross stitched, squares, circles, hedgehogs, cupcakes, and mushrooms, the inspiration seems endless. What fun!

I actually do have a pincushion. It was a Christmas present from some years ago, and it lives on my desk at work. Said pincushion is handmade, very simple, and was, quite truly, a fabulous little Christmas remembrance.

Do you need a quick present idea? Try making my Easy Pincushion for yourself, and the next thing you know, you’ll be producing a bunch as Christmas presents for your crafting group or for your friends at work!

Easy Pincushion
1. Take a small basket. Mine was about 3.5" in diameter.
2. Cut an approximately 6"dia. circle from your favorite fabric.
3. With a hand-sewing needle and thread, sew a running stitch along the edge of the circle to gather the fabric. Stuff firmly with fiberfill and secure thread end.
4. Place the resulting puff in your basket.

And now you’ve got a pincushion. So stick a pin in it and share it with somebody.
