The Flower Bed

The idea of falling asleep
amidst a field of flowers conjures some evocative images. Dorothy and
the field of poppies in “The Wizard of Oz.” Or maybe some happy folks
in a fabric softener commercial. Or the lyrics to a Lupe Fiasco song
that rhyme, “daydream, I fell asleep beneath the flowers / For a couple
of hours, on a beautiful day.” And now, it’s possible to fall asleep
beneath the flowers without conjuring any thoughts of that cheese-ball
Christian Slater film “Bed of Roses,” thanks to a new textile design
company called Amenity. Amenity features organic-cotton duvets, shams,
pillows, totes, and prints which depict the silhouettes of leaves and
fronds and blossoms of various botanicals. Creamy daffodils burst
against robin’s egg blue backgrounds, and cocoa blades of grass wave
across neutral linen, while slate blue branches play against their
shadows. The designers focus on a Scandinavian style, keeping the look
clean, simple, and lovely—very conducive to dreaming of all varieties.
However, after browsing the website (and balking at the idea of a $350
duvet cover, no matter how beautiful), I’m starting to wonder if a
similar look could be achieved by painting on a solid cover duvet,
which could be store-bought or homemade. Maybe I’ll start small and
create a botanical stencil to use on throw pillows and a tote bag or
two before I work my way up to a literal flower bed.
