Cinderella wore one to the ball where she met her prince. Alice wore one through the looking glass. And you probably have a picture of your elementary school self sporting one as well: the headband. Headbands are often associated with cartoons and the people who watch them (or maybe the people who become cartoonish, like Buffy and Midge, hanging out poolside at the country club), but they’ve recently come back to the fashion forefront with celebrities like Eva Longoria walking the red carpet wearing them and looking anything but childish. And I’ve got to say, this summer I’m embracing the headband trend. On days when your tired tresses can’t seem to beat the summer heat and humidity, nothing could be easier than throwing your hair into a pony or bun and topping the look with a chic headband to make you look instantly pulled-together. It requires little time or effort, but will immediately make you look like you’ve spent time planning your hairstyle and accessory combination.

To tie this hair-tying trend to your love of crafting, try crocheting your own headbands, or gluing some of your favorite fabric scraps to wide headbands to create the look of a scarf. (Just a hint—there’s a fab knitted headband in my iKnit Gotta-Get Knit Accessories book.)

I'm not a fan of the ponytailed-headband look, but I have fully embraced the headband-only during this extremely hot summer. It's especially fantastic for those of us with hair too short to pull back.
