The T-shirt Dress

Sometimes a garment comes walking down a runway, and you see it in a photograph, and you’re just awestruck. Other times, you see the piece, and you think to yourself, “I could do that!” A few times now, I’ve seen photographs of a Philip Lim rosette-covered t-shirt dress that is supposedly so hot this summer that it’s sold out in several stores. But whenever I see this dress, I think to myself, why buy designer when I could make one myself? Basically, Lim’s lovely creation is a nearly-knee-length t-shirt dress scattered with rosettes made of the same color fabric. On a white or grey dress, the rosettes barely stand out, but they add a bouquet of understated femininity to a garment that could otherwise easily look like a sack. The rosettes also pick up a theme that’s popular among other designers as well, like Marchesa, a label Jennifer Lopez has been wearing a lot lately. I imagine a similar look could be achieved with an American Apparel t-shirt dress, available online for around $30 (http://store.americanapparel.net/rsas313.html), and an old t-shirt in the same color cut up to make the rosettes.

I can see myself wearing such an ingeniously (and easily) embellished frock to beach parties, out to dinner with girlfriends, and while exploring new towns on vacation. What could be comfier than a t-shirt than a t-shirt dress? And when the basic tee is jazzed up with rosettes, the look is anything but basic.
