Packing It In

Calgon, take me away!  Well, the season is upon us when you don’t have to settle for a bubble-bath to breeze off to some faraway place.  This is weekend getaway season, my crafty chicas!  With beautiful weather to enjoy, now is the time to go, go, go.  You can head off to some nearby spa for a weekend of pampering (take your best gal-pal or three and pretend it’s a junior high sleepover, except with more adult beverages and less prank-calling, hopefully).  You can take a road trip through a rural area and score big on antiques.  You can go visit that girlfriend you’re always meaning to see, but never actually do.  And given this time of year, you could even head to Nowheresville for the current folk music/arts and crafts/chili/daffodil/whatever festival for some down-home fun and kitschy souvenirs.

But what you might not be able to do is figure out what to pack.  I know I can’t!  Why is it that Doris Day always seemed to be whisked away on a weekend getaway with a cute bag the size of a hatbox (surely all of Doris’ makeup wouldn’t have even fit in that thing, right?), and I tend to be the girl lugging a week’s worth of stuff so heavy it requires a bag tricked out with wheels?  I tell myself it’s because fashonistas like me need options.  You never know what you might need, or if the weather will suddenly change, or if you might get into a horrific accident and actually need five pounds of first-aid supplies.  Not to mention the fact that we’ve all got to pack our latest project to work on in the car, hotel room, or poolside cabana.  It’s time to embrace the less-is-more philosophy and convince myself to actually take an overnight bag-sized bag on my next weekend getaway.  Because when I’m trying to get the weight of the world off my shoulders, I certainly don’t want to replace it with the weight of my luggage!
